The surgery of the temporal bone requires a high education level. Also under convenient conditions, the injuring
rate of the N. facialis, the Sinus sigmoideus, the Cochlea or the Dura is mentioned in the literature between 2% and 6%.
For surgical training and planning of interventions e.g. AttikoAntrotomy, Mastoidektomy or Facialis representation
cadavers, technical and virtual models can be applied.
The modular simulation system for temporal bone surgery offers in a novel training environment new possibilities
for all education levels and surgical use cases. The skull is connected via the USB-interface with a standard
computer. No cost-intensive special hardware is required.
The skull-module is connected via the USB-interface with a notebook Based on the modular structure (skull-module,
temporal bone-module) only the temporal bone-module will be exchanged after each simulation.
The training system is combined with a Webcam-based navigation system. Thus the position of the instrument's tip
can be determined within the CT-images in real time.
The function "Endoscopic view" allows the surgeon to apply every surgical instrument as virtual endoscope.
Due to the change of the transparencies, hidden anatomical structures behind the bone can be represented.
