A main focus of PHACON is the development and production of surgical simulation systems for education and training of surgeons.
PHACON systems are worldwide unique and applied for patents.
They allow surgeons to train surgical interventions (e.g. the ablation of bone tissue in temporal-bone surgery) under
realistic conditions.
Due to the application of real surgical instruments during the simulation, the surgeon has realistic haptic experiences.
The system detects injuries of critical structure (nerves, vessels etc.) and
gives a signal to the surgeon. This technology of damage
detection is a platform technology which can be implemented in anatomical models for different surgical fields. Based on the
first simulation system for otosurgery,
the PHACON technology can be applied to develop systems for other surgical interventions
(sinus surgery, neuro-surgery, heart surgery etc.).

PHACON processes visual medical data (CT, MRT, 3D-US, segmented data) to create individual patient-specific
3D-models.
These models provide surgeons and patients with a possibility to gain information on complex
surgical interventions beforehand. This means a gain in safety as risks can be estimated more reliably
before interventions. Surgical interventions can be simulated directly on tangible models by use of real
surgical instruments (e.g. a surgical drill).
PHACON supports physicians with Custom-Built/ -Services to realize research projects.
